How to Prepare for Your Senior Graduation Portrait Session

Hey everyone! I'm so glad you stopped by my blog!

The topic for today is one that I always hear my clients asking about, so I wanted to bring you some validation & clarity!

Let's be real for a minute: figuring out what to wear for your senior portraits can feel way more complicated than it should be.

You want to look like you...but the best version of you. You want something timeless...but still trendy. Something that shows off your personality, but that your mom won't cringe at. Sound familiar?

Don't worry-you're not the only one staring into your closet thinking, "I have absolutely nothing to wear." The truth is that this decision feels hard because these photos matter. Senior portraits aren't just for yearbooks or Instagram. They're snapshots of this huge milestone in your life that will be displayed on walls in your family's home & wallpaper on your mom's lockscreen. Of course, you want to feel confident & look amazing.

That's where I come in! I'm here to make it easier for you with some simple tips that'll help you choose the right clothes, style your hair & makeup, and even set the vibe for your session with a playlist that gets you feeling your authentic self!

What to wear: Confidence is Key

A few outfit tips to keep in mind:

  • Bring Variety: Choose a few different looks-something casual, something a little dressier, and something that feels uniquely you- whether that's jeans and a tee, a sundress, or a favorite hoodie.
  • Think about color: Solid colors usually photograph the best. Avoid busy patterns or neon shades that might distract from your face.
  • Stay true to your style:  This isn't the time to try on a totally new aesthetic unless it feels right. You should look at your photos & see yourself-just a little more polished.

Getting Hair & Makeup: Natural but Photo-Ready

You don't need to go full glam (unless you want to), but a little extra effort goes a long way on camera. Here's why:

  • Cameras can sometimes wash you out, so a touch more color than usual helps.
  • Consider professional makeup for a polished look or try a makeup tutorial online. (I can recommend some talented, local makeup artists).
  • Practice your hairstyle a few days before the shoot to ensure you’re happy with it or have a hair stylist give you a blowout & style, the day of your shoot. Keep in mind, if you're someone who never wears makeup, don't feel pressure to start now. The goal is to look like YOU!

Pro tip: Consider doing a trial run with your hair & makeup a few days before your session-this helps you feel prepared & confident when the big day arrives.

Bringing a Friend: Because having your bestie their cheering you on, brings the magic!

  • Invite a friend to join you for support and fun.
  • A friend can provide positive feedback and make you feel more at ease.
  • They can help with outfit selection and assist with props during the shoot.

Props: A little piece of you or your life can portray authenticity

  • Bring items that represent your hobbies, interests, or future plans (e.g., instruments, sports gear).
  • Consider personal items like your favorite book, a graduation cap, or a sign with your school's name.
  • Plan a fun theme to incorporate into your portraits, if desired.

Music: Brings Confidence & Excitement

Want to make your session feel fun & chill? Come with a playlist!

Seriously. Music is one of the easiest ways to calm your nerves & help you get in the zone. Whether your vibe is chill acoustic or loud hype songs, having a soundtrack for your shoot can loosen you up & make everything more natural. And yes, we'll totally dance between shots, if you're up for it!

  • Create a playlist of your favorite energetic songs to get you excited before and during the shoot.
  • Consider songs that uplift your mood or hold special memories.
  • Play the music in the car on your way to the session to pump yourself up!

Final Thoughts

Deciding what to wear for your photo session can be stressful-but it doesn't have to be. With a little planning & some helpful tips (like these!), you'll show up feeling confident, prepared & totally ready to kill your session!

You don't have to be a model. You don't need a perfect wardrobe or flawless skin. You just need to show up as yourself, and I'll take care of the rest.

Want more help planning your session? I've got you. Let's make it fun, easy, and totally unforgettable! Schedule a call with me & let's get to know each other before your session!
